Livestreaming is broadcasting of audio and video simultaneously in real-time over the Internet. It is often referred to simply as streaming. Non-live media such as video-on-demand, vlogs, and YouTube videos are technically streamed, but not live-streamed.
Livestream services encompass a wide variety of topics, from social media to video games to professional sports. The social networks Facebook Live, Twitter, LinkedIn are offering live video through streaming or though software or cloud-based streaming platforms. Streaming through Instagram and Tic-Toc is only possible through their native apps.
Besides YouTube, sites such as Twitch are one of the most popular streaming platforms. Besides categories for watching people play video games and esports, Twitch is now broadening, with a category called “Just Chatting” usually having the most viewers.
Live Streaming includes user’s interaction via chat rooms. Platforms often include the ability to talk to the broadcaster or participate in conversations in chat.
In 2020 the Corona pandemic led to a boost in Webinars and Live-Video streaming on the social networks. Twitch, Facebook and YouTube strongest gains with two or three-fold more viewers for live content. The acceleration has slowed down as of 2021. The trend for live streaming remains upwards.
